A message that’s been pushed in the fitness industry is that “more” is better. More weight, more reps, more time spent working out. What I’ve learned over the years, through some very tough lessons that came in the form of injuries, is that “more” is not always better.
I find immense joy in what I do in the gym and I value being able to do that in my 60’s, 70’s and beyond. I realized that what I was doing in the gym in my 20’s wasn’t sustainable long term, without risking my ability to move the way I wanted to years down the road. Recovery was a key component of my training that was lacking in my 20’s, that I refuse to go without now.
Our bodies need time to rest, restore, and recover in order to function optimally. For me, this comes in the form of very gentle movement, quality sleep, and nutritious and delicious food. While it’s not the most fun and exciting, consistent recovery habits outside of the gym have absolutely improved my performance in the gym and have helped my body feel so much better.
Incorporating mobility into my recovery routine absolutely changed the game for me. Increased mobility of my joints has allowed me to increase my strength and performance, and decrease the risk of future injuries.
