Welcome to the next chapter…
Over the last 2 years I have been going through A LOT of life changes, both personally and professionally.
With these changes, one of the things that continuously came up was feeling a bit disconnected from my work. I have always been really passionate about what I do, so to feel confused about things was really troubling.
What I started to realize was that 11 years ago I went through this EXACT same moment…
The truth is, I’ve gone through a lot of my own struggles, transformations and realizations to get to a place of believing that what I look like is ultimately not going to bring me the type of happiness I’m looking for.
11 years ago I was a young trainer who used movement to overcome my depression. I was EXTREMELY adamant and passionate about my clients moving to care for their bodies and their mental health and wanted nothing to do with those looking to start their movement journey because they wanted to change the way they looked.
Eventually I looked around and realized that I had very few clients because my message was extreme and it wasn’t resonating. I wasn’t meeting people where they were at. Instead, I was expecting them to be in the same place I was. To have the same relationship with their body as I did…
Although this was 11+ years ago I remember this moment like it was yesterday…
It finally hit me one day that if my goal was to get the world to move more and to help people feel confident and comfortable in their body through movement, I needed to do a WAY better job of meeting people where they were at rather than turning them away because they wanted to lose weight.
MOST PEOPLE start their movement journey because they want to change their body. Who was I to tell people this was wrong?! Who was I to deter someone from movement just because that was their primary motivator…
I was young, VERY passionate about doing things differently and honestly, had a bit of an ego in thinking I knew what was best for people…
After realizing that there was NO WAY for me to get more people moving if I was turning away everyone that came into the gym wanting to lose weight, I decided to change up my message a bit…
I no longer turned away clients, I just didn’t co-sign their message of needing to lose weight. Instead I knew that if I could get them on a regular movement schedule, things would start changing. Slowly but surely, each client started adding more and more movement into their week. They were excited about what their body was able to physically DO and for most of them, changing the way they looked was no longer the top priority.
My key take away at that phase in my career… don’t judge where people are at on their health journey, allow them to have their own experiences and learn their own lessons. If changing the way they looked was their main motivator to move and it was working, who was I to judge it!
Fast forward to these past 2 years… I’ve moved my career online, created a workout platform, Just Move, and am still on my mission to get more people around the world up and MOVING!
Although I know I am encouraging people to move more and have fun while doing so, these past 2 years have really left me feeling like I could be doing a better job at this…
After a lot of therapy, hard conversations, and self-reflection, one of the things I’ve realized is that I’m repeating my old pattern…
I’m “preaching” a message of why people should move more that isn’t resonating with many.
I’m doing a terrible job of meeting people where they are at…
Yet again, I had to realize that if 90% of people start their movement journey to change the way they look, WHO AM I to say that’s wrong…
So welcome to the next chapter… a phase of life that I am feeling SO GOOD about.
I am SO clear and more passionate than ever about helping people feel confident and comfortable in their body and I believe movement is such a powerful tool in helping to do that.
