Food, glorious, food!

Bodies come in all different shapes and sizes, but most of us have been taught that there is only one acceptable way to look. This mentality completely negates the beauty in diversity of the human body and it’s enforced by restricting a very important thing we need to live — food.

If eyes are the windows to the soul, then our stomachs are the foundation. Food is nourishment, fuel, comfort, culture, and so much more. But over time, food has become villainized … and it’s time that we take back the power.

Just imagine the slice of pizza twirling its evil mustache as it ties you to the train tracks of self-image and makes you feel weak just for eating. Or the delicious eggs benedict cackling over their cauldron, proud that they’ve dinged your confidence because you enjoyed your favorite brunch menu item. Here’s the good news — food is NOT the enemy.

Intuitive eating is a philosophy of eating that makes you the authority of your body and its hunger signals (and yes, hangry is a real thing). There are no rules or restrictions, so nothing’s off limits and you can eat any time of the day. Trusting your intuition isn’t always easy (and neither is perfecting a relationship to food), but here are three things to help get you started:

1. Eat a mindful meal. This means sitting down with your plate of food without ANY distractions. Put down your phone, turn off the tv, and just be present. When you cut out all of the noise, it’s easier to pay attention to your feelings of hunger and fullness.

2. Honor your body (and your taste buds). Make food choices that will make your body feel good. Choosing mostly plants is a great way to do that, but if you’re craving an ice cream cone—eat it! Balance is key and denying yourself will only make you want it more. This is about progress, not perfection.

3. JUST MOVE. You knew this was coming. 😊 Stop calculating calories when you work out and just pay attention to how energized and great you feel.
